Surf City Marathon Race results and recap

Hi! I ran the surf City Marathon this morning! It’s one of my favorite races in southern California. here are my results and recap…

The surf City Marathon and half Marathon is in Huntington Beach, CA aka surf City USA. many of the course is along PCH in HB.

The night before the race I did set out my clothes and broke the #1 guideline of races (don’t try anything new on race day). I just purchased some new running tanks and wanted to wear one.

Race morning always starts very early. I’m extra busted because I stayed out too late last night. Oh well, in some cases you gotta get out for a bev.

I did my typical pre-race rituals … clothes, sunblock, coffee, 02 Gold…

and I had my fuel ready to get and go.

The best part of the surf City Marathon expo…

There was a VW van club displaying their vans. inside one of the cars was a massive pup. I love him.

Surf City Marathon Race Morning

Race morning!

The full marathon starts before the half so the porta potties were empty. Boom.

Some of the course was on the beach bike path. I’ve heard people complain about this because full marathon runners turn away from the finish line to back track for a few miles on the path. That is kind of defeating. But, it’s on the bike path and it’s hard for me to complain about being at the beach

My race…

My goal was to run slow for the first half of the race (I was thinking goal pace plus 30 to 60 seconds) and finish at goal pace. I was thinking about this and kind of hesitant because it’s very super hard to finish strong like that on a marathon. I don’t know if I’ve ever run a negative split race before. But, I know it was a smart goal so I told her I’d opt for it.

Long story short… I didn’t hit that goal. I had a really hard to time running my slower pace, but I did really make an effort to keep it at an easy pace. It felt easy, but I knew I’d regret it later. I did. I was strong for about 16 miles and then started to slow down. I pushed myself in the last 6 miles but I’m just not in good enough shape to run fast at that point.

The good news is I can take this as an opportunity to learn where I am best now and what I need to do to train for my goals.

I felt very tight and exhausted and essentially wrecked best after the race. So, I don’t think I could have done much better at the end of the race, but I could have run smarter in terms of pace and being much more aggressive at the end. I gotta just say my mantra and get it together.

Also, I tried to run the tangents but still ended up doing 26.56. You never run 26.2 miles exactly but this was a little unexpected because there aren’t a lot of turns on the course.

Best part of the course – views of the ocean.

Second best part – the Bacon and Beer Station!!!!

Someone was saying “have some sodium, get on the podium!” as I passed. I completely believe in tons of sodium (that’s what works for ME, don’t try this at home) so I loved that.

Thoughts on surf City half / full marathon… great course. It’s mostly flat. Near the ocean makes for cooler weather than inland.

Last Camiseta Selección de fútbol de Portugal year it was HOT. and there have been a few years I’ve run it and it’s been hot, so that’s a risk. but it’s a flat course and well organized.

Post-race party… nachos.

Ben came over to my parents’ after and brought nachos… for himself. but I ate some of them. maybe many of them. .

Buuuuut, I failed to remember MY GARMIN. <- major stop working of America. I don’t Camiseta Club America even understand what to state for myself. I took it off after my run yesterday morning as well as put it by the door table, not back in my runner bin.

Raw Vegan flat Bread

I am a sucker. Yep, if I see a “NEW!!!!” product on the shelves or on a Camiseta Kawasaki Frontale commercial I throw my dirty green paper at the nearest sales person and have that new item in my grubby hands faster than you can say ‘Snuggie’.

So, when I spotted these Wrawps at my local health foods store I had to have them. But, I was stopped by the price – I think they are something like $8.00 for a pack of Camiseta Barcelona three.

Um, hello. I find it ironic that you have to be a doctor to afford health food. I mean, docs can prescribe their own meds. I’m over here with a HMO – gimme the good stuff as an ounce of prevention!!

So, I passed on them the first time. but when I went back there was a nice lady sampling the Wrawps and I tried all three flavors. I liked them!

Finally I exchanged a week’s worth of pay for a few hippie wraps.

These raw vegan flat breads are super healthy because they’re 99% veggies. The ingredients are: zucchini, apple, flax, coconut, sprouted lentils, agave, raisins and cinnamon. and they’re super low calorie too – 60 calories for one big wrap (the other flavor is only 45 calories).

The energizing morning flavor is sweet, so that was obviously my favorite. I slathered some PB&J on top and ate it with breakfast. but when I shared a bite with Ben he said, “I feel sorry for people who have to eat that…” So there’s that.

I made a pizza with the ‘spicy’ flavor for lunch today. I think it came out delicious, but this doesn’t work super well with pizzas because the crust burnt within two minutes under the broiler.

Love: That they’re chewy! That the morning flava is sweet. Expansion! I think they expand in my stomach and make me super full after. (Some might put this in the don’t love category.)

Don’t love: That they cost so much. They’re difficult to actually eat as a wrap since they’re thick.

2 Weeks up until the Boston Marathon–My thoughts VLOG

The Hyland’s team was put together for a few truly great reasons. So they put together an all female team to share the journey of training to run 26.2 miles.

A.) train for the race

It was a process of discovering about ourselves along the method to the surface line. Ugh. I’ve been there. You wake up feeling great, step on the scale and in seconds your day has turned from wonderful to FAIL.

This is actually part of the reason I stopped weighing myself for a long time. I didn’t need that weighing on me all day (ha, weighing on me). I finally weighed myself recently and was content with the number – I’m not at goal yet but I was checking progress.

But I realize the scale is just one way to tell if I am losing weight and gaining fitness.

How much you weigh is only one way to tell if you are getting healthier and losing fat. There are plenty of other ways to keep track of diet success…

6 ways to measure Weight Loss progress without the Scale

1. Measurements. This is one of the best ways to tell if you are losing weight and you don’t have to deal with water weight fluctuations like you do with a scale. added bonus: It’s nice to see your thighs or waist go down as a direct result of lots of crunches or lunges or your fave exercises!

2. Clothes. pick a pair of non-stretchy jeans and use that as a tool to tell you if you are shrinking.

(But Monica, just throw out those jeans from that time you had mono in college, you’re not going to fit in them again…) #Kidding

3. Body Fat. get your body fat tested at the gym (or doctor’s office). most gyms do this for free!

4. The mirror or other people. If you look in the mirror and feel like you’re looking good – own it! Or if someone gives you a compliment – remember it! We’re too quick to remember the bad photos or comments and forget the good ones.

5. how you feel! Do you feel good? Is your energy level up? check in with yourself on how you feel and use that as a measure of progress.

Instead of recording your weight on the calendar use smiley faces or a scale of 1-10 to gauge if your eating and exercise are making you feel good.

This tip is kinda cheesy, but I’ve worked with dietitians who have used this happy / neutral / sad face method as a way to record if you are eating too little or too much.

6. fitness progress – Pay attention to your improvements in your exercise routine. Are you able to make it through a Zumba class easier? Is your usual walk around the block getting easier and faster? Can you switch to heavier weights for your workouts?

I’d rather cut minutes off my marathon time then numbers off my weight – that has been my focus lately. and the reality is I have Camiseta Selección de fútbol de México lost A lot more time off my running pace than Camiseta Stade Rennais FC pounds on the scale. but if I just worried about the scale I would feel like a failure right now instead of proud of my accomplishments!
